2012 Season Standouts
2012 SEASON REVIEW: The Sky Sox have already posted the seventh most wins in team history at 75, and the 12th winning season in the Sky Sox 25-year history. The Sky Sox set team records for strikeouts in a season with 1070 and counting, while also setting a new high in team doubles 344 and counting (good for the most in the PCL this season). Andrew Brown (98, tied for 9th most in Sox history) and Matt McBride (87) have combined for the most RBI of any two players on a PCL team with 185 between the two PCL All-Stars (while the Sox will likely be the only team to have three players with 80 or more RBI this season with Chad Tracy’s 81 RBI). The Sky Sox set a new team record with five players with 30 or more doubles this season, and McBride and Tracy became only the second pair of teammates to both collect at least 38 doubles in the same season in Sox history.
SCAHILL THE TRUE SKY SOX: Sky Sox starting pitcher Rob Scahill has been the only pitcher for Colorado Springs that has been on the roster from the start of the 2012 season until today. Scahill set the new individual record for strikeouts in a season with 151 and counting, the first time a Sox pitcher has eclipsed more than 140 strikeouts in a season. Scahill will tie the record of 29 starts set by Joe Skalski in the Sox inauguaral season with today’s outing, and Scahill can become the 23rd pitcher in Sox history to win ten games in a season if he can pull off the win in today’s season finale.
BIG MAC: Sky Sox utility player Matt McBride can become the tenth player in team history to post a season average of .340 or more if he can notch one hit in today’s season finale (even if he goes 1-for-5), and his batting average no matter the outcome of today’s game will be the highest since Garrett Atkins posted the highest average in team history at .366 during the 2004 season. McBride is just the seventh player in team history to collect 40 or more doubles in a season in Sox history. McBride leads the Sox in doubles (40) and is tied for the team lead in triples with Tommy Field (6), and could become only the second player in team history to lead both categories in a season (Geronimo Berroa in 1991).
HUMIDOR REVIEW: The Sky Sox 2012 season started with the installation of the Minor League’s first humidor, and this season the Sox will allow less than 130 homers for the first time since 1995, they could post a top ten team ERA in franchise history (they are currently tenth in team history with a 5.07 ERA). Dating back to the 2005 season, the Sky Sox have given up more than 63 homers at Security Service Field (they are currently at 49 homers allowed at home). The Sox are currently at their fourth lowest homer total in team history at 107.
SOX SET ATTENDANCE RECORDS: With the 8,798 fans in attendance for yesterday’s win, the largest crowd of the season, the Sky Sox have already set a new average attendance record with their 68 total openings this season. The crowds for the last two games, 8,790 and 8,798 respectively, have been the largest back-to-back crowds in team history. Also from 1988-2009 there were a total of 20 games over 8,000, but over the last three seasons there have been 19 games over 8,000 (nine this season, a new team record).

CARRER YEAR FOR BROWN: Sky Sox outfielder Andrew Brown hit his team-leading 23rd homer of the season in last night’s win, and his third in the last six games since rejoining the Sky Sox on August 4. The 23 homers is a career high for Brown in his six professional seasons, one of many career highs Brown has posted already this season. Brown moved in to the league lead with 91 RBI on the season (18 more than he has ever posted in his career), has 55 extra-base hits (ten more than he has ever posted), 111 hits (nine more than his previous career high), 76 runs scored (nine more than the previous high) and 29 doubles (12 more than the previous high). Brown has 43 homers in his two career Triple-A seasons to go along with 164 RBI in 199 total games.
CHACIN’S RETURN TO COLORADO SPRINGS: Sky Sox starter Jhoulys Chacin will be making his first appearance with Colorado Springs in more than two years tonight, with his last start for the Sox coming on August 10, 2010. In his last season with the Sox in 2010, Chacin posted a 1.51 ERA (35.2 ip, 6 er) while totaling 34 strikeouts, and allowed one earned run or less in six of his seven starts that season. Chacin pitched for the Sox in the 2009 season as well, and is the starter for the last Sky Sox no-hitter on August 18, 2009 at Oklahoma City (Chacin went 5.1 innings in the combined no-hitter with Joel Peralta, Juan Rincon and Randy Flores), one of two no-hitters the Sox tossed that season (Brandon Hynick’s perfect game being the other).
ONE MORE WIN: Last night’s serie opening win for the Sox gave them 64 wins on the season, matching the most wins for the Sky Sox under Stu Cole in seasons he has managed the entire year (Cole took over for Tom Runnels during the 2009 season after Runnels became a coach for the Rockies) and with a win tonight set a new record for wins with Stu solely at the helm. Cole earlier this season moved in to second place all time in managerial wins, trailing only Brad Mills in career Sky Sox manager wins.
SOX THE PCL BEST SINCE JULY: WIth their win last night, the Sky Sox have won the most games in the Pacific Coast League since the start of July at 24 wins. Unfortunately the team the Sky Sox are chasing down for the Pacific Northern Division crown, the Reno Aces, ranks second in the league in wins during that time frame with 23. Reno holds the best winning percentage at .622 (23-14) since July, barely edging out the Sox at .615 (24-15).

BROWN’S STREAKS AT SECURITY SERVICE: Sky Sox outfielder Andrew Brown has the longest active home-hitting streak in the league at 18 games, which he started on June 9 against Sacramento. It is the second longest home hitting streak by any player this season in the Pacific Coast League, trailing only Reno’s Jake Elmore who had a 21-game streak that was snapped on July 12. Brown also has the second longest active home on-base streak at 18 games (trailing only Adam Rosales’ 22-game streak, who is currently with the Oakland A’s). During this 18-game home hitting and on-base streak, which started on the same day, Brown is batting .481 (37-for-77) with eight homers, 32 RBI, nine doubles and 23 runs scored.
STARTING OFF RIGHT AT HOME: The Sky Sox have currently won nine consecutive home series openers, with the streak starting in their series with the Tucson Padres on June 2. The all-time Sky Sox record is 10 consecutive home series opener wins, set during the 1994 season (the final game of that streak was a five-inning game against Phoenix called due to rain on September 2nd of that season). The Sox are 11-3 overall this season in home series openers.
TRACY BRINGING ‘EM HOME: Sky Sox first baseman Chad Tracy will be facing his former team today in the Round Rock Express, where last season he tied for the PCL lead in RBI at 109. Tracy has totaled 69 RBI this season for the Sox, third most on the team behind Andrew Brown (88) and Matt McBride (77), but since June 1st Tracy has the most RBI on the Sox with 53 and trails only Jerry Sands (54) from Albuquerque in the PCL during that time span. Tracy also became the third Sox player to double-digit homers with a solo shot in Wednesday’s win.

BLACKMON’S BACK WITH A VENGENCE: Since Sky Sox outfielder Charlie Blackmon returned to the Sky Sox on July 4 from injury he leads the PCL in runs scored at 35 and in hits at 49, while he is tied for the most total bases in the league during that span with 77. Also during that stretch, Blackmon leads the Sky Sox with .392 batting average (3rd best in the PCL in that time frame), 18 extra-base hits, a .469 on-base percentage and a 1.085 OPS while totaling the most stolen bases on the team with seven. Blackmon has collected a hit in 25 of the 32 games since returning, and has raised his average from .203 to .328 during those 32 games, and his average is the highest among current Sky Sox players. Blackmon leads the Sox with a .408 on-base percentage.
BROWN MATCHES CAREER HIGH: Sky Sox slugger Andrew Brown hit his second home run in as many days yesterday to increase his team-leading total to 22 long bombs this season. Brown has now tied his career high at any professional level with the 22 blasts, matching his total while with the Springfield Cardinals (St. Louis Double-A) during the 2010 season. With his three-run homer yesterday, Brown also equaled his homer total from last year against Omaha while with the Memphis Redbirds when he appeared in nine games against the Storm Chasers.
HARRIS HAULING IN RBI: Sox infielder Brendan Harris has totaled the fifth most RBI on the Sky Sox with 49 on the season, but in his last 23 games since after the All-Star Break Harris has totaled 23 RBI, which is tied for the fourth most in the league during that span and second most on the Sox with Chad Tracy (Former Sky Sox utility player Matt McBride leads all PCL still with 28 RBI since the break). Harris totaled 26 RBI in his first 57 games this season.
HOLDING ON TO LEADS: This season the Sky Sox hold a record of 51-1 when leading after six innings, the only team in the league that has yet to lose multiple games when holding a lead after the sixth. Every other team in the PCL has at least three losses in that situation (Omaha leads the league with 12 losses in that situation). The Sox only loss when leading after six innings came at home to the Fresno Grizzlies on May 4.
Andrew Brown Strong in 1st Rockies Start
Outfielder Andrew Brown, who was promoted from the Sky Sox to the Colorado Rockies yesterday, made an impressive showing in his first career start for the Rockies today leading the team with three hits and and tying Carlos Gonzalez for the team lead with two RBI in the 9-6 loss to Pittsburgh. The three hits were a career high in Brown’s 13 total Major League games (Brown appeared in 11 games with the St. Louis Cardinals last season in his MLB debut) and the two RBI tied a career high.
Brown batted cleanup for Colorado and went 3-for-5 in the game, collecting his first RBI as a member of the Rockies on a infield single with the bases loaded in the second after the Pirates intentionally walked Carlos Gonzalez to get to Brown. After the Pirates took the lead 6-5 with a five-run third inning, Brown tied up the score on his second RBI single of the game in the fourth inning. Brown notched his third hit of the game on a double to left field (Brown led the PCL with 52 extra-base hits before his call-up yesterday).
In his final at-bat of the game in the eighth, Brown faced his former Nebraska teammate Tony Watson representing the tying run with runners on second and third. In the at-bat, Brown turned on a Watson offering and nearly tied the game but the ball sailed just to the left of the left field foul pole, then Brown struck out on the next pitch.
It was Brown’s second appearance for the Rockies as he made his Colorado debut yesterday as a pinch-hitter, and hit a fly ball to the right field warning track.

BROWN BATTING RUNS IN: With his RBI double in the third inning of last night’s loss, his ninth RBI in his last four games, Sky Sox slugger Andrew Brown raised his team-leading RBI total to 76, good for second in the Pacific Coast League behind Reno’s Ryan Wheeler (83 RBI). Brown is now two RBI away from the most RBI a Sky Sox player has totaled in the first half of the season since 2005, when Joe Koshansky totaled 78 RBI in the first half during the 2008 season.
EKSTROM EXCELLENCE: Sky Sox reliever Mike Ekstrom totaled three strikeouts in last night’s loss in his two innings of work, the ninth time in his last eleven appearances that he has totaled multiple strikeouts. Ekstrom leads the Sky Sox relievers with 48 strikeouts on the season, trailing only Tucson’s Cory Burns for the most strikeouts for pitchers who have not made any starts this year. Ekstrom leads all Sky Sox pitchers with double-digit appearances in WHIP at 1.14, and has the most appearances in the Pacific Coast League (36) without allowing a home run.
DAY AFTER SOX OFFENSE EXPOLSIONS: In the games after the Sky Sox two largest run totals this season (22 runs against Salt Lake on May 30 and 19 runs in the series opener), Colorado Springs has been held to one run and six hits in both games. One run is the lowest total against a Pacific Northern Division opponent this season. Before being held to six hits yesterday, the Sox had totaled 69 hits in their previous five home games.

Last Night’s Game: 19-4 Win in Series Opener Against 1st Place Reno
BROWN’S BIG NIGHT: Sox slugger Andrew Brown went 5-for-5 with two homers in last night’s blowout win, the first multi-homer game for a Sky Sox player this season as well the first five-hit game for a Sox player at home in 2012. The Sky Sox had gone 84 games to start this season without a multi-homer game, when the previous record was 64 games during the 2004 season. Brown ranks second in the PCL with 75 RBI, and leads all of Triple-A in RBI since the start of May with 68 RBI (seven more than any other player), while leading the league with 45 extra-base hits this season (39 since the start of May). Brown is the team leader in runs at 61 and is second in hits at 90, trailing only Matt McBride who leads the team with 91 hits. Brown has four homers in his last three games.
RECORDS VS RENO: Last night’s 19-4 win on 21 Colorado Springs hits was the most runs the Sky Sox have scored against the Reno Aces, with the previous record occuring last season at 18 runs on April 14th, 2011, as well as the most hits the Sky Sox have totaled in a game against the Aces (the Sox had reached 20 hits twice against Reno, April 22, 2010 at Reno and April 14, 2011 at Security Service Field last season). The 8,721 fans in attendance was the largest home crowd against the Aces, breaking the previous record of 7,783 set on June 9th, 2011.
BROWN ON BASE: Brown’s five hits extended his on-base streak to 24 games, the longest on-base streak for the Sox this season. The previous long on-base streak was 23 games set by outfielder Tim Wheeler, and Brown’s streak is tied for the second longest active streak in the PCL behind New Orleans’ Mike Cervanek’s 27 game streak.
POSITION PLAYER PITCHER VS SKY SOX: Aces shortstop Taylor Harbin pitched 1.1 innings against the Sky Sox last night, the first time an opposing position player has pitched more than one inning at Security Service Field since August 29, 1991, when Gregg Ritchie pitched 1.2 innings for Phoenix in a doubleheader game. It was also the second time a position player has pitched against the Sky Sox this season (Salt Lake’s Paul McAnulty pitched one inning in the Sox 22-8 win at Salt Lake on May 30th).
Sky Sox Notebook 7/3
K-BRERA: Sky Sox left-hander Edwar Cabrera, in his Triple-A debut, struck out 13 in his 6.2 innings of work which is tied for the second most strikeouts by a Sox pitcher in a game in team history and one strikeout away from the team record. The most strikeouts by a Sox pitcher occurred on May 5th, 1997, when John Thomson struck out 14 batters in 7 innings pitched at Tucson. Cabrera tied the mark for second place held by Mark Brownson, who struck out 13 batters in a complete game win at New Orleans on May 11th, 1999.
McBRIDE TO REPLACE BROWN ON PCL ALL-STAR TEAM: Sky Sox outfielder Andrew Brown was named to the PCL Midseason All-Star team for a second straight year (last year while with Memphis), as he leads the Sky Sox in home runs (13), RBI (68), runs (56) and total bases (156). Since the beginning of May, Brown leads all of Triple-A with 61 RBI, and has totaled the most extra-base hits (36) in the same time frame, while also leading the Sox with 70 hits since May 1st. Due to personal reasons Brown will not be participating in the All-Star Game and Sky Sox utility player Matt McBride, who leads the team in batting average (.341, sixth best average in the PCL) and hits (88), will replace Brown as the lone Colorado Springs representative at the Triple-A All-Star game in Buffalo, NY.
SOX AND STRIKEOUTS: Three Sky Sox pitchers (Edwar Cabrera, Joe Torres, Carlos Torres) combined to total 17 strikeouts in last night’s win, the most strikeouts any team in the Pacific Coast League has totaled this season in one game. With Sacramento matching their season high of 13 strikeouts last night, the Sox narrowly overtook the River Cats for most team strikeouts in the PCL this season at 670 with Sacramento totaling 669 for the year.
WHEELER’S HOMECOMING: Sox outfielder Tim Wheeler smacked his first homer this season while also notching his second straight multi-RBI game in last night’s win, his first back-to-back multi-RBI games in 2012. A Sacramento native that was drafted out of Sacramento State University, Wheeler leads the Sox with 5 RBI in the series. Wheeler missed the first trip to Sacramento earlier this season due to a hand injury.
BROWN ON BASE: Sox slugger Andrew Brown is currently riding a 22-game on-base streak, tied for the second longest active streak in the league with Las Vegas’ Jonathan Diaz behind New Orleans’ Mike Cervanek’s 25-game streak. SOX STARTER NOTES: Scahill picked up first win at Security Service Field in last start vs Salt Lake (won two straight decisions after losing previous six). Team leader in strikeouts with 84, fourth in the PCL and one of only nine pitchers in the league with at least 70 strikeouts
CURRENT WIN STREAK: Yesterday’s win extended the Sky Sox win streak to five games, equaling their longest streak of the season when Colorado Springs won five straight against Las Vegas and Tucson during the first homestand of the season. During the streak the Sky Sox have outscored their opponents 42-20 and out hit them 58-55.
SOX AND SWEEPS: The Sky Sox will look for their first sweep of the season with a win today, and the Sox are the only team in the Pacific Coast League that has yet to either sweep a team or be swept by a team. Colorado Springs is one of six teams without a sweep (Memphis, Nashville, Round Rock, Tacoma, Tucson) and one of seven teams that has yet to be swept (Albuquerque, Las Vegas, New Orleans, Omaha, Reno, Sacramento).

SKY SOX VS TACOMA: The Sky Sox and Rainiers split their first series of 2012 in Tacoma early in April, and splitting is something these two teams do best. The 2011 series between the two Pacific Northern Division teams was split 8-8, the second time in the last three seasons the two teams have split the season series. The all-time record between the two teams in split in the 300 total games played at 150-150, but Colorado Springs owns the edge at Security Service Field at 82-59.
WHAT BROWN CAN DO FOR THE SKY SOX: Sky Sox outfielder Andrew Brown set a single game high for the Sky Sox this season with 6 RBI in last night’s smashing of Salt Lake while hitting his 11th homer of the season, his third consecutive game with a homer. BIG MAC: Sky Sox utility player Matt McBride collected four RBI in last night’s win, and became the first player on the Sky Sox to reach 80 hits this season which ranks 13th in the PCL. Since the beginning of the series with Reno on June 11, McBride has totaled 20 hits in 11 games with 13 extra-base hits and 39 total bases, all of which are the most in the PCL during that time frame.
