Baseball games are back, and the Colorado Rockies gear up to play their first games of Spring Training on Friday afternoon.
Before the Rockies take the field against the Arizona Diamondbacks, here’s a quick update on the past week surrounding Colorado’s camp.
Man Down – Earlier in the week, RHP Jhoulys Chacin, one of the Rockies’ top starting pitchers from last season, was shut down for at least a week because of inflammation in his right shoulder. Story by MLB.com’s Thomas Harding here.
The 26-year-old righty enters his sixth season at the big league level (all with the Rockies). Last season Chacin started 31 games, compiling a 14-10 record with a 3.47 ERA. In a team-high 197.1 innings, he struck out 126 batters.
CarGo staying in left – After some discussion in the past couple weeks, Rockies manager Walt Weiss decided to keep Carlos Gonzalez (right) in left field instead of moving the 28-year-old to center field after the team traded CF Dexter Fowler to the Astros in the off season.
In 110 games last season, Gonzalez hit .302 with 26 home runs and 70 RBI. He is a two-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner.
Center field Platoon – With Gonzalez staying put in left, center field has a couple candidates vying for playing time in the season. Possible options are Drew Stubbs (acquired in a trade with the Indians), Brandon Barnes (acquired in the Fowler deal), and former Sky Sox players Charlie Blackmon and Corey Dickerson.
Blackmon has seen action with Colorado the past three seasons and has split the seasons between the Rockies and Sky Sox. Dickerson played in his first season with the Sky Sox last season, and made his major league debut with the Rockies in June 2013.
Pitching Rotation – The Rockies recently released a tentative pitching schedule for the team’s first six games.
