Nick Masset is back in the Majors.
On Monday, the Colorado Rockies announced they have selected the contract of Sky Sox RHP Nick Masset (left), and optioned down 3B Ryan Wheeler to Colorado Springs. To make room on the 40-man roster for Masset, the Rockies also moved RHP Tyler Chatwood to the 60-day disabled list from the 15-day DL.
The 31-year-old Florida native got transferred to the Sky Sox from Extended Spring Training on April 11 and has pitched extremely well in eight appearances. In 7.2 innings, he didn’t allow a single run, while allowing just one hit and one walk.
Masset is now the eighth different Sky Sox player to get called up to the Rockies this season.
Masset was added to the active roster on Monday, and he also saw his first game action on the same day. Masset pitched one inning against the Texas Rangers and didn’t allow a run, though he did allow two hits and a walk, getting a double play and a ground out to get out of the inning.
This was his first appearance in the Majors since 2011 after injuries set him back. He pitched in just nine games in the minors during 2012 and missed the entire 2013 season because of a right shoulder surgery on 9/7/2012.
Prior to his injury, Masset pitched in 308 Major League games compiling a record of 16-14 with an ERA of 3.78, while punching out 285 batters in 333.0 innings. His 231 appearances with the Cincinnati Reds from 2009-11 were tied for the most in the MLB during that stretch.
He also saw Major League time early in his career with the Texas Rangers and the Chicago White Sox.
Wheeler will rejoin the Sky Sox after beginning the season with Colorado Springs. He was promoted to the Rockies on May 2nd in place of Josh Rutledge, who was placed on the DL with a viral infection. In two games with the Rockies, Wheeler went 2-for-4 with a homer and an RBI.
