Colorado Springs was doubled up to the tune of 10-5 in the series opener against the Iowa Cubs yesterday, dropping their record to 1-4 on this road trip. Jorge Lopez completed three innings and took home the first loss of his season. Garin Cecchini and Adam Weisenburger went deep in the loss. We turn the page and look ahead to tonight’s tilt which features RHP Hiram Burgos for the Sky Sox and RHP Jake Buchanan for the Cubs.
Keeping tabs on the offense over the last seven games…The Sky Sox have banged out 85 hits and plated 50 runs, but the pitching has lacked giving up 69 runs in the last eight tilts.
Before we dive into today’s game the Brewers and Sky Sox have announced a few roster moves:
ADD: INF Nate Orf promoted from Double-A Biloxi
Orf advances to Triple-A for the first time in his four-year professional career. The infielder was hitting .268/440/.306 with 15 hits, 12 walks, and 12 runs scored in 19 games with Double-A Biloxi.
DEL: RHP David Goforth recalled to Milwaukee
Goforth returns to the majors for his second-straight season. In 20 appearances in 2015 the righty went 1-0 with a 4.01 ERA in 20 appearances. He was 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA in 8 appearances with the Sky Sox this season.
Colorado Springs Sky Sox (8-11) at Iowa Cubs (8-11) – 6:08 p.m. – Principal Park, Des Moines, Iowa
Pitching Matchup: RHP Hiram Burgos (1-2, 10.64) vs. RHP Jake Buchanan (0-1, 14.54 )
Sky Sox Pitcher: RHP Hiram Burgos is set to make his fourth appearance (third start) of the season for Colorado Springs. He’s 1-2 with a 10.64 ERA and has allowed 14 runs (13 earned) in 11 innings on 18 hits, 4 walks and 10 strikeouts. The veteran righty is in his eighth professional season and has made 134-career appearances, all within the Brewers organization. Burgos was selected in the 6th round of the 2009 draft out of Bethune-Cookman University.
Last Time Out: 4/23/16 – Due to travel issues, Burgos came out of the bullpen to face the Omaha Storm Chasers at Werner Park on Saturday and things did not go so well for the righty. He logged three innings in relief and allowed 9 runs (8 earned) on 8 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Burgos threw 77 pitches in the outing. His best outing came prior to that when he picked up a win against Memphis at home on April 18.
2016 Game Log:
I-Cubs Pitcher: RHP Jake Buchanan gets his second turn in the rotation for the I-Cubs. Buchanan’s season started sourly as he was released by the Astros coming out of Spring Training. The Cubs signed the righty to a minor-league deal on April 3. He was originally slected by the Astros in the 8th round of the 2010 draft out of NC State.
Buchanan is 38-43 with a 4.13 ERA in his MiLB career, appearing in 147 games since 2010. He made his big-league debut in June of 2014 and is 1-3 with a 4.06 ERA in 22 appearances in MLB, his last coming in 2015 with the ‘Stros. He, like yesterday’s starter Williams, is a sinker ball pitcher that relies heavily on ground ball outs.
Last Time Out: 4/24/16 vs. OKC – Buchanan took the loss in his lone appearance of 2016 on April 24 against the OKC Dodgers. The righty pitched into the 5th, but gave up 8 runs (7 earned) on 9 hits, 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.
