The Sky Sox are coming off of a great 14-game homestand on which they went 8-6 and wrapped the stint with three straight wins over the Redbirds. Colorado Springs finished the near-two-week stay at home with an 11-6 win over Memphis last night. The Sky Sox scored the 11 runs on 18 hits and had all 8 position players get a knock and seven of the eight tallied multi-hit performances. Yadiel Rivera led the charge with three RBI hits, while Kyle Wren extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a three-hit performance and Josmil Pinto grabbed the other three-hit game. Tyler Cravy took the hill following his suspension and earned the win with six very strong innings.
Tonight, the Sky Sox and Express are set to open up a four-game set at Dell Diamond tonight at 6:05 MT. This will be the lone series on the brief roadtrip for Colorado Springs before they return home on Thursday to begin a four-game series with New Orleans. The Sky Sox will send righty Hiram Burgos to the mound, while the Express will counter with righty Jose Monegro. Burgos is 3-5 with a 4.45 ERA in 13 games (11 starts) and Monegro is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 6 games (3 starts) with the Express. The Sky Sox and Express have squared off in four games this season at Security Service Field with Round Rock winning three of the four matchups. Colorado Springs Sky Sox (35-37) at Round Rock Express (39-35) – 6:05 p.m. – Dell Diamond – Round Rock, Texas
Pitching Matchup: RHP Hiram Burgos (3-5, 4.45) vs. RHP Jose Monegro (1-1, 5.40)
Sky Sox Pitcher: RHP Hiram Burgos will make his 14th trip to the mound for the Sky Sox and 12th from the starting role tonight against the Express. Through his first 13, the righty is 3-5 with a 4.45 ERA allowing 37 runs (32 earned) on 74 hits, 31 walks and 48 strikeouts in 64 2/3 innings. He has faced the Express on one occasion and is 0-0 with a 2.08 ERA allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, 3 walks, and 4 strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work. He’s gone at least five innings in each of his last eight outings covering six starts and one relief appearance. Burgos is 2-3 with a 3.65 ERA allowing 18 earned runs over 44 1/3 innings during that stretch. Burgos was selected by the Brewers in the 6th round of the 2009 draft out of Bethune-Cookman University and has made 142 minor-league appearances to the tune of a 40-42 record with a 3.78 ERA and 6 MLB starts in which he has gone 1-2 with a 6.44 ERA. He has not pitched in the big leagues since 2013.
Last Time Out: 6/20/16 vs. Omaha – Burgos took the hill and had to hustle to complete five innigns as the rain was bearing down on Security Service Field. He did just that as the righty limited the Storm Chasers to 2 runs on 3 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts in five innings of work. As soon as the third out of the top of the fifth inning was recorded, the tarp was on the field and play would not resume. Burgos and the Sky Sox won the game 4-2.
Game Log with the Sky Sox:
Express Pitcher: Right-hander Jose Monegro gets the spot start for the Express in the opener of the four-game series tonight at Dell Diamond. Monegro has seen limited time on the mound in 2016, making just 7 appearances, 3 of which have been starts, combined between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Round Rock. He is 1-1 with a 7.56 ERA in total and 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 6 appearances with the Express. In Triple-A he has allowed 16 runs (14 earned) on 20 hits, 10 walks, and 17 strikeouts. Opponents in the PCL are hitting .286 against the righty from San Francisco De Macoris in the Dominican Republic. He came out of the bullpen at Security Service Field back on May 5th and gave up a run on two hits (one of which was a solo shot by WMB), and he struck out one. Monegro was signed by the Rangers as an international free agent on May 20, 2008 and has spent his entire career within the walls of the Texas organization, compiling an 18-10 record with a 4.07 ERA in 183 career outings (11 starts).
Last Time Out: 6/19/2016 at Nashville – Monegro relieved Richelson Pena and picked up the win in relief over the Nashville Sounds in his last appearance. The righty tossed three scoreless innings and allowed one hit while striking out three. He threw 40 pitches, 24 for strikes in a game the Express won 3-1.
