The month of June was very kind to the Sky Sox as they posted a record of 18-13 through the 31 games, resulting in the first winning month for the franchise since May 2013. The month culminated with the opener of a four-game series against the New Orleans Zephyrs last night at Security Service Field. The game was through two-scoreless before the skies opened up and caused a 1:47 rain delay. All of the action occurred following the delay. The Zs scored first in the fourth inning thanks to a Tomas Telis sac fly, but the Sox tied it in the next half inning on a fielder’s choice and took the lead for good thanks to a RBI single off the bat of Will Middlebrooks in the fifth. Colorado Springs ensured the victory with five runs across the seventh and eighth innings. Brent Suter earned the win in the 7-3 game for the Sox.

Before we get into tonight’s tilt, the Sky Sox announced their team players of the month for June. Brent Suter was named pitcher of the month and Will Middlebrooks was tabbed the player of the month. Suter was second on the team with three wins during the month while posting a 3.33 ERA in 27 innings pitched and striking out 10 batters over seven appearances, including four starts. Middlebrooks had 23 runs, 39 hits, 11 doubles, seven home runs, 29 RBI, and .676 slugging percentage in 30 games which led all Sky Sox players during the month.

Tonight, the Sky Sox and Zephyrs get ready for the second game of the four-game series and homestand at Security Service Field. The Sky Sox are a game above .500 (39-38) for the first time since April 20 and look to make it to two games above .500 for the first time this season with a win tonight. In hopes of getting to that mark, the Sky Sox will send righty Hiram Burgos to the hill against fellow right-hander Kendry Flores. Burgos is 4-5 with a 4.61 ERA in 14 games with the Sox, while Flores is 1-1 with a 2.59 ERA in six starts with the Marlins’ top affiliate. The Sky Sox are 5-4 against New Orleans this season 87-69 all time against the Zephyrs and 40-33 at home.
