Sky Sox Notebook 7/3

K-BRERA: Sky Sox left-hander Edwar Cabrera, in his Triple-A debut, struck out 13 in his 6.2 innings of work which is tied for the second most strikeouts by a Sox pitcher in a game in team history and one strikeout away from the team record.  The most strikeouts by a Sox pitcher occurred on May 5th, 1997, when John Thomson struck out 14 batters in 7 innings pitched at Tucson.  Cabrera tied the mark for second place held by Mark Brownson, who struck out 13 batters in a complete game win at New Orleans on May 11th, 1999.

McBRIDE TO REPLACE BROWN ON PCL ALL-STAR TEAM:  Sky Sox outfielder Andrew Brown was named to the PCL Midseason All-Star team for a second straight year (last year while with Memphis), as he leads the Sky Sox in home runs (13), RBI (68), runs (56) and total bases (156).  Since the beginning of May, Brown leads all of Triple-A with 61 RBI, and has totaled the most extra-base hits (36) in the same time frame, while also leading the Sox with 70 hits since May 1st.  Due to personal reasons Brown will not be participating in the All-Star Game and Sky Sox utility player Matt McBride, who leads the team in batting average (.341, sixth best average in the PCL) and hits (88), will replace Brown as the lone Colorado Springs representative at the Triple-A All-Star game in Buffalo, NY.

SOX AND STRIKEOUTS:  Three Sky Sox pitchers (Edwar Cabrera, Joe Torres, Carlos Torres) combined to total 17 strikeouts in last night’s win, the most strikeouts any team in the Pacific Coast League has totaled this season in one game.  With Sacramento matching their season high of 13 strikeouts last night, the Sox narrowly overtook the River Cats for most team strikeouts in the PCL this season at 670 with Sacramento totaling 669 for the year.

WHEELER’S HOMECOMING: Sox outfielder Tim Wheeler smacked his first homer this season while also notching his second straight multi-RBI game in last night’s win, his first back-to-back multi-RBI games in 2012.  A Sacramento native that was drafted out of Sacramento State University, Wheeler leads the Sox with 5 RBI in the series.  Wheeler missed the first trip to Sacramento earlier this season due to a hand injury.

BROWN ON BASE:  Sox slugger Andrew Brown is currently riding a 22-game on-base streak, tied for the second longest active streak in the league with Las Vegas’ Jonathan Diaz behind New Orleans’ Mike Cervanek’s 25-game streak.  The longest on-base streak this season by a Sky Sox player is 23 games set by outfielder Tim Wheeler.

WHAT BROWN CAN DO FOR THE SKY SOX:  Sky Sox outfielder Andrew Brown led the team with two RBI in last night’s win, upping his team-leading RBI total to 53 on the season and he is just one of seven players in the PCL to hit the half-century mark in RBI this season.  Since May 1st Brown has totaled the most RBI of any player in Triple-A with 46.  Brown leads Colorado Springs in runs scored (41), doubles (22) and at-bats (240) while ranking third in hits with 64 behind Matt McBride (76) and Hernan Iribarren (71).

Sky Sox Notes for 4/30 @ Sacramento

Observations from yesterday’s 3-4 Loss in Series Finale at Fresno:

  • STELLAR STARTERS:  Sky Sox starters have given up two earned runs or less in 18 of the 24 games this season (and only ten combined earned runs in their last six games).  Christian Friedrich, Carlos Torres and Alex White all have made at least four starts (with Torres making five starts) and in those starts they have all given up less than 10 earned runs.
  • PITCHING PROWESS: The Sky Sox pitching staff continues to be the story of the Sox 13-11 start, with Colorado Springs becoming the first team in the PCL to reach 200 strikeouts (currently totaling 204 coming in to tonight’s game) giving up the least home runs at 11 while also being tied for the most shutouts as a team with three and the fewest walks issued at 62.  The Colorado Springs staff has also allowed the fifth fewest earned runs at 88 (Sacramento has allowed the four fewest earned runs at 87).
  • PACHECO’S HOT STARTS WITH SKY SOX: In his first twelve games with the Sky Sox this season catcher/infielder Jordan Pacheco has collected a hit in ten of the twelve games he has started (including eight multi-hit games) and is hitting .438 (21-for-48) with two doubles, two home runs and seven runs scored.  During the 2011 season, Pacheco also collected a hit in ten of his first twelve games with the Sky Sox as well as scoring seven runs during those twelve games last year.
  • SERIES STREAK ENDS: The Sox had not lost a series this season until losing three of four to Fresno over the weekend, and now the only PCL teams yet to lose a series in 2012 are Fresno, Omaha and Sacramento.

Tonight’s Sky Sox starter: Rob Scahill (2-2, 7.11 ERA)

  • Has won both of his road starts for the 2012 season, allowing only two earned runs in each start.
  • Collected his first Triple-A win his first Triple-A start, the only Sky Sox starting pitcher to win their first start of the 2012 season.

Sky Sox Notes: 4/18 vs Tucson

Observations from last night’s game: 8-1 Rout of Tucson in Series Opener

  • MOSCOSO’S K’S: Sky Sox starter Guillermo Moscoso notched his first win of the season, going 6.2 innings and striking out 10 Tucson Padres, the most strikeouts of any Sox starter this season.  The ten strikeouts is the most by a Colorado Springs starter since July 17th, 2004, when Jeff Francis struck out 12 New Orleans Zephyrs at New Orleans.  The ten strikeouts were the most at Security Service Field since Jason Young mowed down 11 Iowa Cubs on August 29th, 2002.
  • SOX STREAKING: The Sky Sox have currently won four straight, and five of their last six games, and during the streak the Sky Sox have allowed just six total runs.  Sky Sox starters have an ERA of 1.59 in their 22.2 combined innings pitched during the win streak, and have allowed just two earned runs in the last 17.2 innings.  Before last night’s seven-run win, the largest margin of victory for the Sky Sox in 2012, Colorado Springs had won the previous three games by a combined three runs with two last at-bat wins.
  • ROOM ABOVE .500: With last night’s 8-1 win, the Sky Sox now sit at 8-5, the most games above .500 the Sky Sox have been since May 12, 2010 when they were 18-15.
  • THREE OR LESS:  The Sky Sox have held their opponent to three runs or less in eight of the 13 games this season, and the Sox are undefeated in those games (8-0). Colorado Springs has not won a game when they allow more than three runs (0-5).

  • Torres has never faced the Tucson Padres or any Tucson franchise in his career, as he is making his third career PCL start in tonight’s game.

Sky Sox Notes: 4/7 @ Reno

Observations from last night’s game: 9-5 loss to Reno Aces

  • The Rockies top outfield prospect and seventh overall prospect Tim Wheeler notched his first Triple-A hit with a double in the first inning.
  • Utility player Hernan Iribarren missed last season due to a torn ACL, but showed no signs of rust entering last night’s game as a pinch-hitter and remaining in the game as an outfielder going 2-for-3 with a RBI.
  • Aces outfielder A.J. Pollack recorded five hits against the Sky Sox in last night’s 9-5 loss, a feat that was accomplished four times against Colorado Springs last season.  Pollack is the second Reno player to record five hits against the Sky Sox, as Wily Mo Pena was the first last season on June 11th, 2011.
  • The Sky Sox have lost their last seven games on the road to the Aces.

Tonight’s Sky Sox starter: Carlos Torres
