Edwar Cabrera Makes Sky Sox History…Again:

Colorado Springs left-hander Edwar Cabrera continues to rewrite the Sox record book in only two games played for Sky Sox, as he set the record for most strikeouts in a Sox debut in his first game with 13 against Sacramento (as part of a team record 17 strikeouts in that game) then became just the second Sky Sox pitcher in team history to hit a grand slam in last night’s ballgame and first ever at Security Service Field.  The first Sky Sox pitcher to pull off the grand slam feat was Brian Conroy on July 23, 1994 against Phoenix.  Cabrera’s homer was his first extra-base hit of his career (and third overall hit) and it was the first homer by a Sky Sox pitcher since Brandon Hynick against Fresno on June 2, 2009.  Sky Sox pitchers have now hit 24 homers in team history, 12 on the road and 12 at home.

SOX STARTER NOTES:  Left-hander Edwar Cabrera makes his Security Service Field debut, after setting a record for most striekouts in a Sky Sox debut with 13 against Sacramento on July 2nd which was part of the team record 17-strikeout performance for the Sky Sox.  The 13 K’s were tied for the second most by a Sky Sox player in a game, one shy of the record set by John Thompson on May 5th, 1997 when he struck out 14 batters in 7 innings pitched at Tucson.  Cabrera tied the mark for second place held by Mark Brownson, who struck out 13 batters in a complete game win at New Orleans on May 11th, 1999.  Earlier in the 2012 season, Cabrera led theTulsa Drillers in strikeouts (82), starter’s ERA, innings (98.0), WHIP (0.90) and batting average against (.186) and made his Major League debut for the Rockies on 6/27 at Coors Field against the Washington Nationals and gave up seven runs (five earned) in 2.1 innings.

DOUBLING UP: The Sky Sox are currently tied with Las Vegas and Albuquerque for the second most doubles in the PCL at 197, trailing Reno’s 217 doubles on the year.  Since the start of June, Colorado Springs leads the PCL with 97 doubles (87 in June, 12 more than any other team) with Reno totaling 89 during that same time frame (the Aces have already totaled 18 doubles this month).  Sox first baseman Chad Tracy leads the PCL with 16 doubles since June 1st, and is tied with teammates Andrew Brown and Matt McBride for the third most doubles in the league at 26 while Aces outfielder Adam Eaton ranks second with 29 doubles trailing only Albuquerque’s Luis Cruz’ 31 for the league lead.

HOME SWEET HOME?: The Sky Sox have lost four of their last five home games against the Aces, and in those four losses Colorado Springs has been outscored 39-14 and outhit 53-36 by Reno.

Sky Sox Notebook 7/3

K-BRERA: Sky Sox left-hander Edwar Cabrera, in his Triple-A debut, struck out 13 in his 6.2 innings of work which is tied for the second most strikeouts by a Sox pitcher in a game in team history and one strikeout away from the team record.  The most strikeouts by a Sox pitcher occurred on May 5th, 1997, when John Thomson struck out 14 batters in 7 innings pitched at Tucson.  Cabrera tied the mark for second place held by Mark Brownson, who struck out 13 batters in a complete game win at New Orleans on May 11th, 1999.

McBRIDE TO REPLACE BROWN ON PCL ALL-STAR TEAM:  Sky Sox outfielder Andrew Brown was named to the PCL Midseason All-Star team for a second straight year (last year while with Memphis), as he leads the Sky Sox in home runs (13), RBI (68), runs (56) and total bases (156).  Since the beginning of May, Brown leads all of Triple-A with 61 RBI, and has totaled the most extra-base hits (36) in the same time frame, while also leading the Sox with 70 hits since May 1st.  Due to personal reasons Brown will not be participating in the All-Star Game and Sky Sox utility player Matt McBride, who leads the team in batting average (.341, sixth best average in the PCL) and hits (88), will replace Brown as the lone Colorado Springs representative at the Triple-A All-Star game in Buffalo, NY.

SOX AND STRIKEOUTS:  Three Sky Sox pitchers (Edwar Cabrera, Joe Torres, Carlos Torres) combined to total 17 strikeouts in last night’s win, the most strikeouts any team in the Pacific Coast League has totaled this season in one game.  With Sacramento matching their season high of 13 strikeouts last night, the Sox narrowly overtook the River Cats for most team strikeouts in the PCL this season at 670 with Sacramento totaling 669 for the year.

WHEELER’S HOMECOMING: Sox outfielder Tim Wheeler smacked his first homer this season while also notching his second straight multi-RBI game in last night’s win, his first back-to-back multi-RBI games in 2012.  A Sacramento native that was drafted out of Sacramento State University, Wheeler leads the Sox with 5 RBI in the series.  Wheeler missed the first trip to Sacramento earlier this season due to a hand injury.

BROWN ON BASE:  Sox slugger Andrew Brown is currently riding a 22-game on-base streak, tied for the second longest active streak in the league with Las Vegas’ Jonathan Diaz behind New Orleans’ Mike Cervanek’s 25-game streak.  The longest on-base streak this season by a Sky Sox player is 23 games set by outfielder Tim Wheeler.
