Sky Sox Notebook 7/3
K-BRERA: Sky Sox left-hander Edwar Cabrera, in his Triple-A debut, struck out 13 in his 6.2 innings of work which is tied for the second most strikeouts by a Sox pitcher in a game in team history and one strikeout away from the team record. The most strikeouts by a Sox pitcher occurred on May 5th, 1997, when John Thomson struck out 14 batters in 7 innings pitched at Tucson. Cabrera tied the mark for second place held by Mark Brownson, who struck out 13 batters in a complete game win at New Orleans on May 11th, 1999.
McBRIDE TO REPLACE BROWN ON PCL ALL-STAR TEAM: Sky Sox outfielder Andrew Brown was named to the PCL Midseason All-Star team for a second straight year (last year while with Memphis), as he leads the Sky Sox in home runs (13), RBI (68), runs (56) and total bases (156). Since the beginning of May, Brown leads all of Triple-A with 61 RBI, and has totaled the most extra-base hits (36) in the same time frame, while also leading the Sox with 70 hits since May 1st. Due to personal reasons Brown will not be participating in the All-Star Game and Sky Sox utility player Matt McBride, who leads the team in batting average (.341, sixth best average in the PCL) and hits (88), will replace Brown as the lone Colorado Springs representative at the Triple-A All-Star game in Buffalo, NY.
SOX AND STRIKEOUTS: Three Sky Sox pitchers (Edwar Cabrera, Joe Torres, Carlos Torres) combined to total 17 strikeouts in last night’s win, the most strikeouts any team in the Pacific Coast League has totaled this season in one game. With Sacramento matching their season high of 13 strikeouts last night, the Sox narrowly overtook the River Cats for most team strikeouts in the PCL this season at 670 with Sacramento totaling 669 for the year.
WHEELER’S HOMECOMING: Sox outfielder Tim Wheeler smacked his first homer this season while also notching his second straight multi-RBI game in last night’s win, his first back-to-back multi-RBI games in 2012. A Sacramento native that was drafted out of Sacramento State University, Wheeler leads the Sox with 5 RBI in the series. Wheeler missed the first trip to Sacramento earlier this season due to a hand injury.
BROWN ON BASE: Sox slugger Andrew Brown is currently riding a 22-game on-base streak, tied for the second longest active streak in the league with Las Vegas’ Jonathan Diaz behind New Orleans’ Mike Cervanek’s 25-game streak. The longest on-base streak this season by a Sky Sox player is 23 games set by outfielder Tim Wheeler.

SKY SOX VS SALT LAKE: In their first meeting of the season the Salt Lake Bees took three of four from the Sky Sox, with the lone win for Colorado Springs coming in their 22-8 victory on May 30, and the Sky Sox are still the only team in the Pacific Coast League to score more than 20 runs in a game this season (the 27 hits are also the highest by any PCL team in a game this year). The Sky Sox took 10 of the 16 games with the Bees last season, who finished last in the Pacific Northern Division, and the 10-6 record included taking six of eight games at Security Service Field. The Bees own the edge in the all-time record at 110-130, but the two teams have split 116 games played in Colorado Springs at 58-58.
HOT WHEELZ: Sky Sox outfielder Tim Wheeler extended his team-high hitting streak to 15 games with a 2-for-6 performance in Sunday’s game. The 15-game streak is the longest hitting streak a Sky Sox player has strung together in 2012 and is also the third double-digit Sox hit streak in 2012. His current 12-game home hitting streak is tied for the second longest in the PCL (two other PCL players have 13-game streaks at home). Since returning from a hand injury on June 1, Wheeler has the most hits on the team with 23 in 16 games and has a hit in every game except for the first game on June 1 in Salt Lake. During that span, Wheeler has raised his average from .200 to .304.
HARRIS HOT IN VEGAS: Sky Sox infielder Brendan Harris went to Vegas and cashed in. While in Sin City, Harris recorded a hit in all four games hitting .429 (6-for-14) with two homers, two doubles, four runs and seven RBI. On 6/17, Harris set season-highs with three hits and three runs while tying the Sky Sox season-high with five RBI.
Wheeler to Make Security Service Field Debut Tonight vs Padres
Coming in to the 2012 season one name on the initial Sky Sox roster stood out, outfielder Tim Wheeler, because of his break out 2011 season in Double-A. Up until now Sky Sox fans have not yet seen the seventh best prospect in the Rockies organization according to MLB.com, because of a broken bone in his right hand that he suffered during the first roadtrip of the season. Until tonight versus the Tucson Padres, as Wheeler will be in the Sky Sox starting lineup June 2 and will be making his Security Service Field debut tonight.
In 2011, Wheeler had 33 home runs for the Tulsa Drillers in the Texas League, the most by any player in Double-A and a record in the Rockies organization for any player at the Double-A level. Wheeler was named to Baseball America’s Minor League All-Star team, the only Colorado prospect on the 2011 team and the first Rockies player since Jhoulys Chacin in 2008 to achieve that honor.
Wheeler led the Texas League in 2011 with 161 hits and 67 extra-base hits, was the only player to amass 100 runs (105) or 300 total bases, and was one of four players in the league with an on-base plus slugging (OPS) of more than .900. In addition to the league-leading power numbers Wheeler also led the Drillers in stolen bases with 21, the second straight season he has totaled at least 20 stolen bases, and was the only player in the entire Minor Leagues to have at least 30 home runs and 21 stolen bases.
Wheeler played in the first eight games of the season for the Sky Sox, posting a .200 average with five hits and four RBI in games at Reno and Tacoma, whose parks are known to favor pitchers. Last night in the series finale at Salt Lake, Wheeler returned from his hand injury to play his first game in more than a month and a half going 0-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
