The Sox won defeated the Fresno Grizzlies 5-3 Friday night to win just their second road series of the year. The win capped a string of seven wins against the Grizzlies in eight games.
With the score knotted at two apiece in the seventh, Josh Fields delivered a bases loaded double for the winning runs as the Sky Sox won for the ninth time in 12 games against the Grizzlies this season.
The Sox took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run home run by Ian Stewart, his seventh of the season.
The win was the third in a row for the Sox on the road, their longest such streak of the season.
Claudio Vargas (2-2, 9.27) picked up the win in relief of Maine, allowing just one hit in 2.0 scoreless innings as the Sox improved to 26-30 on the year. Jim Miller pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his fifth save. Josh Banks took the loss for Fresno allowing five runs on five hits in 4.5 innings as the Grizzlies fell to 23-33.
The Sox return home for an eight-game home stand beginning tonight with a four-game series against the Sacramento River Cats. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM MT.
- Ian Stewart’s homer in the third inning Friday night gave him his 41st homer in a Sky Sox uniform, moving him into a three-way tie with J.R. Phillips and Ryan Shealy for 10th place on the all-time career HR list. Phillips got all 41 homers during his lone season with the Sky Sox in 1999 (single-season record), while Shealy compiled the 41 homers over the 2005 and 2006 seasons (26 and 15, respectively).
