Sox Scribbles: Burgos at Binford Highlights Game Three of Sky Sox and Storm Chasers Series

The Sky Sox have split the first two games of the four-game set against the Storm Chasers, after Monday’s 3-1 loss at Werner Park. In a battle of two Triple-A rookies it was the Chasers’ Jake Junis that made his debut one to remember with seven strong innings, while Josh Hader gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings of work. The Sky Sox run came on a Yadiel Rivera solo homer in the third inning, which gave the Sky Sox a 1-0 lead. Omaha plated its first and go-ahead runs on sacrifice flies and Hunter Dozier added some insurance with an RBI double in the sixth.

This evening, the Sky Sox get ready to square off against the Omaha Storm Chasers for the third game of the four game series and road trip at Werner Park in Papillion, Nebraska. The Sky Sox hope to pick up the W and continue to improve upon their league-worst road record of 20-35. They enter play three games under .500 at 55-58 and still in second place now just 7 games in back of the Dodgers. In hopes of continuing its winning ways and gaining more ground on or keeping pace with OKC, Colorado Springs will send right-handed workhorse Hiram Burgos to the hill against fellow righty Christian Binford of Omaha. Burgos has been roughed up over his last two starts to the tune of an 0-2 record, allowing 9 runs (8 earned) in 10 innings of work, Binford enters play this evening with a 2-9 record and a 5.79 ERA. In 2016 the Sky Sox are 8-6 against the Storm Chasers, they hold an all-time record of 78-115 against them and are 32-62 between the lines at Werner Park.

Pitching Matchup: RHP Hiram Burgos (5-9, 5.16) at Christian Binford (2-9, 5.79)

Sky Sox Pitcher: RHP Hiram Burgos will make his 22nd trip to the mound for the Sky Sox and 20th from the starting role tonight against the Sounds. Through his first 21 appearances, the righty is 5-9 with a 5.16 ERA allowing 67 runs (61 earned) on 130 hits, 47 walks and 80 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings. He is 0-4 in his last six outings and has given up 21 earned runs on 41 hits in 31 innings. His last outing came against Nashville at home and he was roughed up a touch, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, 1 walks, and 1 strikeout. On the road, Burgos is 1-6 with a 5.92 ERA including a poor performance at Werner Park back in April. Opponents are hitting .311 against Burgos. He was selected by the Brewers in the 6th round of the 2009 draft out of Bethune-Cookman University and has made 152 minor-league appearances to the tune of a 42-46 record with a 3.91 ERA and 6 MLB starts in which he has gone 1-2 with a 6.44 ERA. He has not pitched in the big leagues since 2013.

Last Time Out: 8/4/16 vs. Nashville – Burgos dropped his second start in a row and lasted just five innings against the Sounds. He gave up 4 runs on 6 hits, he walked 1 and struck out 1 as well. He threw 78 pitches, 53 for strikes and took the loss in a game the Sky Sox lost 5-4.

Storm Chasers Pitcher: Right-hander Christian Binford will toe the slab for the home team in the third game of the series. He has made 14 starts with Omaha this season to the tune of a 2-9 record and 5.79 ERA allowing 54 runs (51 earned) on 97 hits, 25 walks, and 49 strikeouts. Opponents in the PCL are hitting .303 against the righty. Binford has made 20 starts between Omaha and Double-A Northwest Arkansas and is a combined 5-11 with a 5.49 ERA. He has faced the Sky Sox twice time this season and has taken the loss both times. Binford was selected by the Royals in the 30th round of the 2011 draft out of Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania. In his pro career, the Maryland-native is 28-39 with a 3.82 ERA in 99 appearances, 95 starts across four-plus seasons.
