Sox Scribbles: Hader Against Roth Sets Premiere Pitching Matchup for Sunday Night Baseball in Texas

Hiram Burgos stole the show in the opener of the four game series Saturday night in Round Rock. The righty picked up the eighth win of his season with six scoreless innings, in which he struck out a career-high 11. The Sox stalled the Express 2-0 in the shutout. Damien Magnifico returned to the Sky Sox and earned his 18th save of his season with a scoreless ninth. Garrett Cooper delivered the wood in the form of a two-run single in the fourth inning. Colorado Springs has now won seven straight games over Round Rock.

This evening, the Sky Sox and Express get set for the second game of a four-game series against the Express tonight at Dell Diamond in Round Rock. This is the fourth and final series these two teams will play here in 2016. The Sky Sox enter play looking to continue their winning ways and come into Saturday’s tilt with a road record of 23-35. They are back to one game under .500 at 61-62 and sit in second place, but now are 7.5 games in back of the Dodgers. In hopes of gaining more ground on or keeping pace with OKC, Colorado Springs will send veteran lefty Josh Hader to the hill against one of the PCL’s best in lefty Michael Roth. Hader enter’s play tonight still in search of his first Triple-A win at 0-5 with a 5.30 ERA, while Roth is 9-4 with a 2.85 ERA with the Express. The Sox are 9-4 against the Express here in 2016 and have compiled a 39-42 all-time record against them and are 21-22 at Dell Diamond.

Pitching Matchup: LHP Josh Hader (0-5, 5.30) at LHP Michael Roth (9-4, 2.85)

Sky Sox Pitcher: Lefty Josh Hader is set to make his 12th Triple-A start, his seventh within the lines of Security Service Field, and his 23nd overall between Double-A Biloxi and the Sky Sox. Hader has dropped five of his first 11 Triple-A starts which have come against Omaha (2x), Memphis (2x), Round Rock (2x), New Orleans, Reno, Nashville (2x) and Albuquerque. Last time out the lefty began with three scoreless innings and gave up three runs over the three. He is 0-5 with a 5.30 ERA allowing 35 runs on 54 hits, 28 walks, and 69 strikeouts in Triple-A. PCL opponents are hitting .257 against him.  He allowed 2 runs on 1 hit, 4 walks, and a season-high 9 strikeouts against Memphis in his Triple-A debut on June 12 and tossed five scoreless against the Express on June 27. In 22 starts combined, Hader is 2-6 with a 3.11 ERA and has allowed 42 runs (39 earned) on 92 hits, 47 walks, and 142 strikeouts in 113 innings of work. He made an appearance in the MLB Futures Game and recorded a strikeout of Josh Naylor of the Marlins system with a 96-MPH fastball. The 22-year old is in his 5th professional season after originally being selected by the Orioles in the 19thround of the 2012 draft out of Old Mill High School in Millersville, Maryland. The Astros sent RHP Bud Norris to the Orioles in exchange for Hader in July 2013 and the Brewers acquired him from the ‘Stros in the Jul 30, 2015 deal that sent Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers to Houston for Hader, Adrian Houser, Brett Phillips, and Domingo Santana. What a haul that trade garnered the BrewCrew. The lefty is 23-22 with five saves and a 2.99 ERA in 112 career outings, 80 of which have been starts in four-plus professional seasons.

8/14/16 vs. Albuquerque – Hader was matched up against Rockies’ top pitching prospect his last time out and took the loss. The lefty went 6 innings and allowed 3 runs on 6 hits, 1 walk, 1 hit batter and struck out 6. He threw 90 pitches, 64 for strikes and earned a quality start in a game the Sky Sox lost 3-1.

Express Pitcher: Lefty Michael Roth is tabbed to get the start against the Sky Sox in the second tilt of the series at Dell Diamond. Roth will make his fourth appearance against the Sky Sox and 25th appearance on the season overall. Through his first 24, 19 of which have been starts, Roth is 9-4 with a 2.85 ERA allowing 40 runs (39 earned) on 112 hits, 7 homers, 33 walks, and 80 strikeouts in 123 innings. Opponents are hitting .246 against the lefty who hails from Greer, South Carolina. In his three appearances against the Sky Sox, he is 1-0 with a 1.32 ERA allowing 2 runs on 8 hits, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts in 13 2/3 innings over two starts and one relief appearance. He threw a complete game shutout over the Sox on 6/26.  He ranks 2nd in PCL ERA (2.85),  5th in WHIP (1.18), and 3rd in BAA (.246). Roth is in his first season with Texas and with his third organization overall. He was originally drafted by the Angels in the 9th round of the 2012 draft out of the University of South Carolina. He made his MLB debut less than a year later and took home the win in relief on 4/13/2013. Following his release by the Angels in 2014 he signed with the Indians and made 31 appearances with their top affiliate Columbus. In 105 MiLB games he is 35-25 with a 3.60 ERA and in 23 MLB games he is 2-1 with a 8.50 ERA.

Last Time Out: 8/16/16 at Las Vegas – Roth took his talents to Sin City and was roughed up a touch at Cashman Field. He gave up 5 runs on 10 hits, walked 2 and struck out 3 51s en route to no decision. He tossed 99 pitches, 61 of which went for strikes in a game the Express lost 7-5 in 12 innings.
