Sky Sox feature two Rockies Top Prospects Parker, Matzek

Baseball is back, and with the 2014 season underway both at the Minor League and Major League level, it’s time to take a quick look at some of the top prospects in the Colorado Rockies organization.

The Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox featured two players currently on MLB.com’s Top 20 Prospects on their 2014 Opening Day roster — OF Kyle Parker and LHP Tyler Matzek.

Both players are in their first season with Colorado Springs, and each were key members last season for Double-A Tulsa.

Parker, the Rockies’ sixth-best prospect,  was second on the team with 23 home runs, his third consecutive season with at least 20 homers. He also drove in 74 runs, while hitting at a .288 clip. Though he doesn’t appear on the Top 100 prospects by MLB.com, Parker does rank as the Best Power Hitter in the Rockies organization, according to Baseball America.

Matzek, who is ranked 13th-best in the Rockies organization, also got a promotion to Triple-A. Last season, the left hander compiled a 8-9 record and had 3.79 ERA in 26 starts. In 142.1 innings, the former 2009 first-round draft pick (11th overall) struck out 95 batters, the second most in his four-year career.

The Rockies also feature a plethora of pitching talent, including No. 1 and 2 on the list RHP Jon Gray and RHP Eddie Butler. Both also rank in the Top 25 in all of baseball at No. 14 and No. 41, respectively. The duo will start start the season at Double-A Tulsa.

Butler got the nod for the Drillers on Thursday for Opening Day, tossing five shutout innings, allowing just three hits, walking one, while striking out five.

RHP Chad Bettis checks in at No. 8 of the Top 20 Rockies Prospects, and broke Spring Training with the big club.

The Rockies have six other pitchers in the rankings.
