The Sky Sox fell for the first time in 2016 in 2-1 fashion to the Memphis Redbirds and look to get back to winning ways tonight at AutoZone Park.

Today’s Game Notes

Pitching Matchup: LHP Brent Suter (0-0, 0.00) at RHP Jeremy Hefner (0-0, 0.00)

Sky Sox Pitcher: LHP Brent Suter returns to the Sky Sox rotation for the second time in his five-year professional career. The southpaw went 3-1 with a 3.31 ERA in six starts with Colorafo Springs last season. In his 35 1/3 innings pitched he allowed 15 runs (13 earned) on 35 hits, he walked six and struck out 19 opposing batters. He did not face the Redbirds during his first stint with the Sky Sox.

Suter graduated from Harvard University with a degree in environmental science and public policy, automatically making him the smartest guy in the clubhouse! He is the third Ivy Leaguer to play for Colorado Springs, joining Brad Ausmus (Dartmouth) and Ben Crockett (Harvard). The lefty was selected by the Brewers in the 31st round of the 2012 draft.

Redbirds Pitcher: RHP Jeremy Hefner continues his quest to get back to the big leagues after undergoing two Tommy John surgeries following the 2013 season. In two years with the New York Mets, the native Oklahoman went8-15 with a 4.65 ERA in 50 games. Hefner signed a minor-league deal with the Mets in 2014 and only made five appearances in the Dominican Winter League in 2015. Hefner made 28 starts in the PCL during the 2011 season with the Tucson Padres and went 9-7 with a 4.98 ERA.

Prior to his injuries Hefner threw a fastball in the low-90s, complimented with a slider, sinker, circle change, and curve. The righty signed a minor league contract with the Cardinals in December.

Tune in! Dan Karcher (@SkySoxKarch) continues his 27th season behind the mic for Sky Sox games, he’ll have the call tonight from AutoZone Park. Coverage begins on XTRA Sports 1300 with Matt Pauley (@MattPauleyRadio) and myself with Sky Sox Warmup 5:00 MT.

Farm Report Roundup:

MLB: Milwaukee Brewers (2-2) vs. Houston Astros (1-3)

Tonight’s pitching matchup:

RHP Wily Peralta (0-1, 9.00) vs. RHP Doug Fister (0-0, 0.00)

The Brewers won a wild one last night on the new slide rule. Houston’s Colby Rasmus slid into second base and it was deemed an illegal slide, thus a double play was awarded and the game ended 6-4. Former Sky Sox Scooter Gennett hit his second homer of the season; Ryan Braun and Chris Carter also went deep for the #BrewCrew.

Double-A: Biloxi Shuckers (2-0) vs. Chattanooga Lookouts (0-2) (Twins)

Tonight’s pitching matchup:

RHP Adrian Houser (0-0, 0.00) vs. LHP David Hurlbut (0-0, 0.00)

The Shuckers used three homers from Brett Phillips, Jacob Nottingham, and Victor Roache in their 6-2 win over the Lookouts. Phillips went 3-for-4 in the tilt and is now 4-for-8 with a homer and 4 RBI on the season. Bonus video of Phillips (Baseball America’s No. 4 Brewers prospect) doing Karaoke:

High-A: Brevard County Manatees (0-2) at Daytona Tortugas (2-0) (Reds)

Tonight’s pitching matchup:

LHP Kodi Medeiros (0-0, 0.00) vs. RHP Keury Mella (0-0, 0.00)

The Manatees trailed 6-0 after three innings and could only muster four runs of their own on eight hits in the 10-4 loss to the Tortugas last night. Fidel Peña knocked his first homer of the season for the Sea Cows.

Class-A: Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (0-2) vs. Beloit Snappers (2-0) (Athletics)

The Timber Rattlers, much like the Manatees are 0-2 on the season. Beloit got to the Rattlers early and often plating nine runs over the first five frames before the game was called due to snow. The Snappers took home the 9-5 win. SS Isan Diaz went 2-for-2 with a homer for the Rattlers.

Many thanks to Nick Dobreff and Aaron Cherif (the Sky Sox Media Department) and the Brewers media department for the production of great baseball information, some of which has been and will be applied in this blog all season long.

See you on the radio,
