The Sky Sox fought late-inning adversity, plated four runs in the eighth, and staved off the Sounds’ ninth-inning comeback in their 7-5 series and road trip finale win Thursday night. The Sox head home to Security Service Field with a record of 4-4, the same record they had through the first eight games of the 2014 season. Colorado Springs went 35-39 on the road in 2015.
The heart of the order lived up to its name as hitters 3-6 (Reed, Perez, Elmore, and Cecchini) went 10-for-18 (.556) with a double and three RBI.
Michael Reed went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and his league-leading fifth stolen base in the game. Reed’s on-base streak is up to 20 games dating back to 8/27/15. Over that stretch his hitting .329 (24-for-73) with 6 doubles, 10 RBI, and 9 runs scored.
Jake Elmore went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. He upped his average to .455 (5-for-11) with 3 RBI, 4 walks, and a run scored in six games.
Brent Suter took the hill for the second time this season and pitched through early trouble to complete six innings. He allowed 4 runs on 9 hits and struck out 4. He didn’t walk anyone for the second straight outing in 2016.
Damien Magnifico recorded the four-out save, his second closure of the season. In three outings the righty has logged 4 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed just 2 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 3 opposing hitters.
Play of the Game: Manny Pina stepped into the box with the game tied 5-5 in the 8th inning and delivered a two-run triple (just his 4th career triple in 735 MiLB games). The hit capped off the four-run eighth and secured the win for the Sky Sox who went 4-4 on their first road trip of the season.
